Many Germans left Germany after 1848 because of a failure of a democratic revolution. The Revolution of 1848 failed to unite the German-speaking states into a single nation. Also people sought work and opportunity. The immigrants from this period were nicknamed the “Forty-Eighters,” . They were typically professionals, journalists, and politicians.
