In the Cocking affair (1941), Eugene Talmadge´s, Georgia governor at the time, fired Professor Walter Cocking because of his work for racial integration. Eventually, Talmadge fired members of the Georgia Board of Regents who disagreed with his decision as well.

Because of Talmadge´s actions, all Georgia universities got their accreditations removed, students protested, and Cocking was finally hired again. Talmadge's reputation was damaged enough for him to lose in the state's governor election to Ellis Arnall.
