How is taxonomy used to determine how closely two organisms are related?

You can tell how closely related organisms are by determining the lowest classification that they share. For example, organisms that share the same genus will be more closely related than organisms that share the same family because as each organism has specific traits to fit into a certain classification. So, based on traits that each organism has is what determines how closely related they are to another organism using taxonomy.
