Van Goyen was a 17th century Dutch painter who primarily painted landscapes. However, as noted, he speculated heavily in the Dutch tulip market and wound up heavily in debt. As a result, he was required to sell off his whole personal collection of paintings to settle the debt, although it was not sufficient to clear the balance and he in fact died still heavily in debt.
