During his farewell speech, President Eisenhower specifically warned the United States and its citizens of the dangers of the "military-industrial complex", in which the military portion of the government becomes so intertwined with the private sector and its profit-oriented motivation that it drives the military to seek active conflict in order to profit the private companies. This is a concern which has been echoed continually by policymakers in the decades ever since.
