12 and 36

Suppose the numbers are, x and y.

So, x+y=48……(1)

And one number is 3 times as large as the other.

So , x=3y……….(2)

Now if put value of x from result (2) to result (1) then,

3y+y=48

So, y= 12

And So, x=3y=3(12)= 36
