The evolutionary perspective states that a fear or phobia is developed because of a historical need for survival. If there is something that was a threat to survival, people are conditioned to fear that as going against their goals.

Dr. Blanco's view of this fear best illustrates the evolutionary perspective.

According to the evolutionary perspective of fear, animals and humans are designed to perceive fear because it provides survival value and propagation of the species. Fear protects us from predators and other harms or dangers that threaten our survival. In this instance, the fear of snakes has an evolutionary basis since it leads us to avoid approaching snakes, and thereby, minimize the risk of harm or death.
