In 1977, President Carter appointed Young to serve as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. He was the first African-American to have this position.
In 1981 Young ran for mayor of Atlanta. He was elected later that year with 55% of the votes, succeeding Maynard Jackson. Later, he was re-elected as mayor in 1985 with more than 80% of the votes. He was prohibited by term limits from running for a third term.
