5.8+4.1-12.6+x-8.9=-4.6
We move all terms to the left:
5.8+4.1-12.6+x-8.9-(-4.6)=0
We add all the numbers together, and all the variables
x-7=0
We move all terms containing x to the left, all other terms to the right
x=7
