Explanation: It is estimated that there are about 40,000 Bush Negroes in Surinam and several thousand more in its eastern neighbor, Fiench Guyana. The Bush Negroes, sharp traders and skilled in woodworking, are descendants of the African slaves brought here in the two centuries before slavery was abolished in 1863.
