if you multiply everything by the common denominator 4x then the fractions cancel out.

4x(2/x) + 4x(1/2) = 4x(3/4)
denominators cancel out leaving...
8 + 2x = 3x
then just subtract 2x from both sides
8 = 3x - 2x
8 = x
