First, find a common denominator, in this case number 1 would contain a common denominator of 4, and for number 2 it could be 35 (7 x 5 = 35).

Then create an equivalent fraction, 1/2 turned into fourths would be 2/4. 2/4 + 3/4 = 5/4, which equals 1 1/4. Then add 1 1/14 + 1 + 2 = 4¼

For number 2, 3/7 = 15/35 and 1/5 = 7/35. Add them and get 22/35, then add the other numbers. 4 + 6 + 22/35 = 10 22/35
