Solve or answer the item. 2. (1 pt) A square piece of carpet has a length of 56 inches. What is the area of the piece of carpet?

The area of a square is found by multiplying a side by another side. Since they're all the same, you have:

Area=S*S=S^2
where S is the length of the side of the square. Note that this is the same as writting "S to the second power" or "S squared" (it's called squared because it is in fact the area of such a square)
applying this we'll have:

A=56*56=3136
A=3136 squared inches (a squared inch is the are taken by a square whose sides measure 1 inch)
