The novel “Coraline” begins with the setting of a Modern time apartment in a rural or small town in Great Britain, where a young girl and her parents recently moved.

Neil Gaiman introduces the novel with the door that opens to another world where Coraline finds a different world and other parents too. When her family shifted to the apartment, Coraline’s parents got involved in their works which left her bored. She found a way to get out of her loneliness by exploring the house where she witnesses the door. The setting of the house, the description of the neighbors and the door are also present in the introduction of the story. The setting and the plot of the novel advocates the presence of gothic elements in it. The story is narrated from an adult’s perspective who tells the story of Coraline.
