Is the bacterial uptake of a plasmid from the environment a common event?

A bacteria will only take a plasmid if it’s necessary. It requires extra energy for bacteria to take up a plasmid. For example, if you’re growing it on an amp plate, it needs amp resistant gene in order to survive, therefore it can not “eject” the plasmid.
