When performing CPR, rescue breaths can be given by individuals who are around the victim at that particular point in time, whether trained or not. The purpose of rescue breath is to keep the victim oxygenated pending the time the proper medical treatment can be given. Lack of oxygen during the first few minutes after the victim collapse can lead to brain death. CPR with rescue breath increase the probability of survival of the victim.
