Why is looking at distant galaxies a bit like looking into the past?

because the galaxies we are looking at may be galaxies younger than ours, and we are looking at what the milky way looked like in the past, or maybe those galaxies are just past remnants to the milky way galaxy, the answer all depends on how you view everything, but that is just my thoughts.
