One cause of the rise in silk workshops was the fact that peasants were finally allowed to wear the coveted fabric. Years prior to the Qing dynasty, only nobility and officials of high rank were allowed to own and wear the expensive attire. Robes, hats, ankle wraps, and other garments were now available to the public.
