Jasmine's mother took her to the doctor when she had a sore throat. The doctor determined she had strep throat and prescribed antibiotics, but warned her that she may have diarrhea while taking antibiotics. Why is diarrhea a common side effect with antibiotics?

Hey there,

Well, When taking antibiotics, the antibiotics affect the gut bacteria that help us digest food. Like when you eat alot, you have an upset stomach and alot of times you will then have diarrhea.

Hope this helps.

Ans.

Antibiotics are antimicrobial substances, which can be used to kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. Many useful microbes are found in our body, such as good bacteria found in intestines that help in food digestion.

When we use antibiotics to kill pathogenic bacteria, these antibiotics also kill these good bacteria. This results in improper digestion and causes diarrhea. Thus, diarrhea is a common side effect due to antibiotics as these antibiotics also kill gut microbes that help in digestion.
