The tortoise and the hare are having a race. In this tale, the tortoise moves at 50 feet per hour while the hare moves at 250 feet per hour. The tortoise takes 8 hours longer than the hare to finish. What was the distance of the race?

For Tortoise Let

D = distance of the race

Rate = 50 ft per hour

T = Time

For Hare:

Rate= 250 per hour

Time =T-8

[ Given The tortoise takes 8 hours longer than the hare to finish

That is time taken by Hare is 8 hours less than Tortoise.]

The standard formula for all constant motion is

D = r * t

Distance covered by Hare and Tortoise is same so we have:

50 * t = 250 * (t-8)

Or 50*t=250 t -2000 ( using distributive rule)

Or,

50t-250t= 250t-250t -2000 ( subtract 250t both sides)

-200t = -2000

t= 10.(Dividing both sides by 200)

D= 50t

Substituting t=10 we have

D= 50(10)

D=500ft.

Distance of race is 500ft.
