What is a replacement set in Algebra?

A replacement set is a set of elements which may be used to replace a given variable or placeholder in a expression or an equation. E.g.
let x= 5 and y=3
Determine the value of

8x + 5y
You're going to replace x and y with 5 and 3 respectively.
