the immune system has two lines of defense. specific immunity and non-specific immunity. first is the non-specific which is things like skin and mucus. this immunity defends against all types of pathogens. phagocytes engulf any pathogen so it falls under non-specific. specific immunity is when your body protects against a specific pathogen, for example when antibodies are made it is specific because the antibody is made specifically for that type of antigen. so the immune system protects us by using specific and non-specific immunity, to keep pathogens out and destroy them if they enter your body.
