The Atlantic Charter is a joint declaration signed on August 14, 1941, aboard the USS Augusta, "while sailing somewhere in the Atlantic." The Atlantic Conference was held from August 9 to 12, 1941. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt spoke on behalf of the United States and Winston Churchill on behalf of Great Britain. It states that it has deemed it convenient "to make known certain common principles in the national policy of their respective countries, on which rest their hopes of achieving a better future for the world."

In addition to establishing the points in common, the signing of the letter also resulted in a strengthening of relations between the United States and Great Britain.
