Primarily, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was undertaken in an attempt to break the South Slav states away from Austria-Hungary to be combined into what is modern day Yugoslavia. It was perpetrated by a group who were part of the revolutionary movement that later became known as Young Bosnia.
