What global wind patterns would a sailor use to travel from Europe to North America? And what global wind patterns would the sailor use to get back to Europe?

The east-to-west "trade winds", which were used by Columbus when he sailed from Europe, blow from just south of Europe toward the Caribbean Islands. The west-to-east "westerlies" blow from around the northeastern portion of North America toward northern Europe. The westerlies are responsible for the fact that most weather systems in North America move from west to east.
