Im pretty sure the answer is C because of the cotton gin cotton became the main cash crop and many reffered to it as King cotton

The American Independence was achieved in 1776, after this moment the Southern States primary economic activity was cotton farming (option C) and the land owners used slaves as the main labor force for this activity. At this time slavery was permitted in the country and that is how many people gathered wealthy fortunes in the South. Once the Civil War took place in history, and the Southern States, also known as Confederate, lost against the Union States, slavery was no longer permitted and cotton farming stopped being as productive as before.
