The Renaissance period coincided with an era of exploration by the explorers of Spain, Portugal, and Italy. Their many voyages opened up European contact with much of what is now called "The New World" - North, South, and Central America, as well as the Caribbean islands. Additionally, these explorers strengthened trade ties to Africa, India, and the Far East.
