40 + 15x = 115 <== ur equation
15x = 115 - 40
15x = 75
x = 75/15
x = 5.......the charge is $ 5 per mile traveled

40 is a constant. Charged per mile = x. 15 miles were driven. $115 in all

Set the equation

15x + 40 = 115

Note the equal sign. What you do to one side, you do to the other. Do the opposite of PEMDAS

15x + 40 (-40) = 115 (-40)

15x = 75

Divide 15 from both sides

15x/15 = 75/15

x = 5

5 is your answer

hope this helps
