How long is a string reaching from the top of a 13-ft pole to a point on the ground that is 7 ft from the base of the pole?

a^2 + b^2 = c^2
13^2 + 7^2 = c^2
169 + 49 = c^2
218 = c^2
sqrt 218 = c
14.76 ft <========

Formula: a² + b² = c²

Plug in the numbers: (13)² + (7)² = c²

Simplify: 169 + 49 = c²

Simplify: 218 = c^2

note the equal sign. What you do to one side, you do to the other. Root both sides: 218 = c^2

√218 = √c²

c =√218

c = 14.76 ft

14.76 ft is your answer
