If y = 4/5x - 2, what is the value of x when y = -9?

Plug in y = -9 and isolate x
y = (4/5)x - 2
-9 = (4/5)x - 2
-9+2 = (4/5)x - 2+2
-7 = (4/5)x
5*(-7) = 5*(4/5)x
-35 = 4x
4x = -35
4x/4 = -35/4
x = -35/4

Answer: -35/4
