Most scientists who work in the same field never met each other. However by their work they contribute to the same scientific knowledge.

Yes. There were a few theories that lacked enough evidence at the time of their creation like that the sun was the actual center of the universe instead of the earth itself. The theorist behind this idea lacked some key evidence to this theory and wasn't able to find it before his death. A few decades later another scientist looked into this theory and ended up finding the missing evidence and was able to prove it and that is why we accept it as fact today.
