Explain the difference in the use of a colon and semicolon when writing sentences.

A semicolon is rather like the middle ground between a colon and a comma; when two sentences don't quite stand without the other while still making sense, you might use a semicolon. A colon typically leads into an explanation or a list.
More officially? Either connect two main clauses, but a colon can connect one with a noun.
