The multi disciplinary approach was revolutionary because the ship was stacked with scientific equipment and laboratories which analyzed many things regarding oceanography. They managed to find out more about geological developments by sampling different types of water gathered at various depths, and they also managed to get biological research done by examining animals that lived in the ocean. They would gather stuff by lowering equipment into the depths and then analyzing their findings on the ship. This is basically how oceanography is still done now only the equipment is much more sophisticated.
