The ratio of schooners to skiffs in the bay was

7 to 5. If there were 63 schooners in the bay,
how many skiffs were there?

45 because 9 * 7 = 63, so 9 *5 = 45

7/5 = 63/x
cross multiply
(7)(x) = (63)(5)
7x = 315
x = 315/7
x = 45 <=== if there were 63 schooners, then there were 45 skiff's
