By 3 months of age, babies look closely at the eyes and mouth when studying faces. this change in focus is due to changes in their visiual scanning abilities. As babies grow and mature, so do their eyes. When they start to grow, they focus on other people and their eyes and mouth to try and better understand what they are saying. They scan their face are able to make eye conact. The visual scanning abilitiy allows for a baby to scan another person with their eyes.

Binocular vision which refers to the ability of the baby to focus on an object with both eyes appears between two and four months of age. By 3 months infants have sharper eyesight which enables them to better focus on objects and they start to recognize.
