There are
b boys and
g girls. We know that



b+g=22 (since there are twenty-two students in total)



b=3g+2 (since the number of boys is two more than three times the girls)


From the first equation, we can derive
g=22-b


Substitute this expression in the second equation to get



b = 3(22-b)+2


Expand:



b = 66-3b+2



4b = 68



b = 17
