Drawing pens are sometimes made of bird feathers called quills

This is a true statement. The quill gives a much softer appearance to the pen and a much higher level of control over the ability to make fine strokes. In addition, the quills can be used with dipped ink as a way of setting just how dark or how light the stroke is to be made.
