The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 excluded only Chinese immigrants from entering the United States. It prohibited new chinese immigrants from entering the United States as well as current immigrants from regaining entry if they left the United States. Chinese immigrants that were granted entry, through false papers or court orders, tended to move into the new "Chinatowns" that had been established due to the overwhelming anti-chinese sentiment that had been created. Chinese immigrants became a very close knit group that did not wish to socialize or interact with the general population.
