The Union favored a stronger federal government, which gave federal laws more strength than states' laws. This means that after the Union's victory the federal power became stronger. The economic situation of former Confederate states was ruined, including infrastructure and resources. These states no longer had the capital or manpower to operate their previously functional economies.
