The muckrakers typically went after those businesses who imposed unfair labor practices or forms of mistreatment or abuse towards their employees. One significant area, however, that was overlooked by the muckrakers were the long hours of labor done by sharecropping farmers. This were farmers who worked to receive a portion or "share" of the production of a farm, the land would be worked by them, but would have a landowner that the sharecropper worked for.
