The Butler Act was a Tennesse state law that made it a requirement to teach creationism, the idea that God created man and Earth. This problematic law was at the center of the famous Scopes Trial, in which John T. Scopes was arrested for teaching his students the theory of evolution. This can be seen as a violation of the freedom of religion which is part of the first amendment. This is due to the fact that the state is promoting/establishing an official religion that citizens should follow.
