Supplementary angles are pair of angles that to make a straight angle, or 180°. Here, we're told that the angles (5x + 20)° and 50° are supplementary, which means that

(5x + 20) + 50 = 180

Solving for x, we find

5x + 70 = 180
5x = 110
x = 22

Supplementary means they add to 180

180 = (5x+20) + 50

180 = 5x + 70

5x = 110

x = 22
