Answer:

x =14

y =17

Explanation:

When two parallel lines are intersected by a straight line(called a transversal) 8 angles are formed. There are pairs of angles that are equal

In this figure the angle 116° is equal to the angle opposite 6x + 32 which in turn is equal to this opposite angle

So 6x + 32 = 116

Subtract 32 from both sides to get
6x = 116 -32

6x = 84

x = 84/6 = 14

Now angles 5y -21 and 6x + 32 are linear angles. They lie on the same straight line and their sum = 180°

So (5y -21) + (6x + 32) = 180

But we already found out that 6x + 32 angle is 116°

Substituting we get
5y -21 + 116 = 180

5y + 95 = 180

Subtract 95 from both sides:
5y = 180 - 95

5y = 85

y = 85/5 = 17

So x = 12, y =17

Answer:

x = 14 , y = 17

Explanation:

(6x + 32) and 116 are alternate exterior angles and are congruent, then

6x + 32 = 116 ( subtract 32 from both sides )

6x = 84 (divide both sides by 6 )

x = 14

(6x + 32) and (5y - 21) are a linear pair and sum to 180° , that is

116 + 5y - 21 = 180

5y + 95 = 180 ( subtract 95 from both sides )

5y = 85 ( divide both sides by 5 )

y = 17
