d) As a smart consumer, you are always on the lookout for sales, coupons, and rebates. While shopping for new clothes, you notice that one particular brand of shirts is on sale for 20% off the original price. You also have a coupon for $10 off a $40 purchase. Coupons are applied after the 20% discount is taken. If each shirt originally costs $17.99, how many shirts would you need to buy to be able to use your coupon

Hello there,

Starting from the last step of the problem, your correct answer would be 3 shirt's. We have to round the answer. Which is 2.78. and how I got that was

14.39x = 40
x = 2.78

That costumer would get 3 shirt's

Hope this helps.

1.799 is 10% of 17.99.
1.799 * 2 = 20% of 17.99
3.598 or 3.60 is 20% of 17.99

17.99 - 3.60 = price of shirt with 20% discount
14.39 = price of shirt with 20% discount

14.39x = 40
x = 2.78

You must buy at least 3 shirts to be able to use the coupon

Hope this helps.
