Trade. This is common throughout the world. The earliest settlements were established as areas of trade. Although there are examples associated with settlement of religion. In order to develop into centers of industry, culture, finance, there needed to first be trade in order to obtain basic elements of food, clothing and other supplies.

In the very beginning, the cities grew as centers of trade. This was mainly because they were well-placed along rivers and bodies of water. This gave them an advantage over other parts of the country due to their ability to get goods out to the rest of the world much quicker and with less difficulty.
