It seems as though Maria needs to interview more people to get the best representatives for her study. a good strategy would be to screen representatives first by giving them a written test to see if they would even be close to what she was looking for then from those written tests she could choose who to interview and the interview could be shorter because a lot of information she would have discovered by the written test.
