how does the density of oceanic crust differ from that of continental crust? why is this difference important

Oceanic crust is often made out of rock called basalt. It's quite dense, with its density being 3.0 g/cm^3. Continental Crust often contains granite, and is less dense- about 2.7 g/cm^3.
