equations are given for BC and CD:

CD = 4 - x

both of these equations are equal to each other because AB = BC = CD

to find the value of x, you have to set these two equations equal to each other.


2x + 1 = 4 - x

add x to both sides


3x + 1 = 4

subtract 1 from both sides


3x = 3\\x = 1

now that we know that x = 1, we can plug this value back into the equations


2(1) + 1 = 2 + 1 = 3

BC = 3


4 - (1) = 4 - 1 = 3

CD = 3
