Douglas insisted as many anti-slavery reformers had long done, that the emancipation proclamation was a first step towards Healing a nation diseased by the evil institution. Lincoln’s attention was shifting from keeping the union together to end slavery. Fredrick felt the country’s evil institution and decided to help the people and solve the problem in his own hands
