What is meant by the tri- in the name adenosine triphosphate?

Tri = 3
In adenosine triphosphate, aka ATP, there are 3 phosphate groups Adenine, a nitrogenous base.

Diphosphate on the other hand, has also phosphate groups attached to Adenine, however, the number of phosphate groups is 2.

Remember:
Mono = 1
Di = 2
Tri =3
